Global energy movers and shakers: Africa

Global energy movers and shakers: Africa

Looking ahead to 2021 in our new offshore energy profiles

Africa is home to some of the world’s most notable oil & gas producing countries, as well as some of its hottest emerging regions.

Averaging production of over 4 million barrels per day and with over 70 operators working across the region, there’s still plenty of activity to come. Nearly 100 projects are currently ongoing or expected to start in the near-term.

Archer Knight produces individual country reviews, providing our clients with all the information they need to understand industry dynamics. Find out more about offshore energy profiles by visiting or reports page here or read on for some of the countries we are keeping a close eye on.

Nigeria is member of OPEC and one of the world’s top oil & gas producers. The country has long been hailed as Africa’s powerhouse and in times of crisis its oil market has served as an important alternative to the Middle East.

Among the significant upcoming projects is the Aje Phase 2 development. The Aje field complex is around 60 kilometres offshore Lagos and is intersected by the West African Gas Pipeline, which supplied Benin, Togo, and Ghana.

The new development could bring onstream an additional 8,000 to 12,000 barrels per day from the field. Operated by Yinka Folawiyo Petroleum, drilling at the field is scheduled for 2020.

The third phase of development, already approved by Nigeria’s government, could also see the field’s gas resources developed.

Meanwhile, all eyes are on Mozambique as the next potential energy superpower as it embarks on a new era of energy investment.

Initial exploratory drilling more than 10 years ago revealed economy-changing volumes of natural gas which could make the country the third-largest holder of proven natural gas in Africa (behind only Nigeria and Algeria).

Our offshore energy reports include historical background, likely future activity, and prospects, as well as detailed reviews of operators, contractors, and service companies working in each country. For more information on our Africa reports, get in touch here.
